Ear to the Street is the debut album by The Conscious Daughters, the Oakland duo of Carla “CMG” Green and Karryl “Special One” Smith, released in November 1993 by Paris’s Scarface Records with Priority.
The story
Paris signed the pair after hearing their demo. “Somethin’ to Ride To (Fonky Expedition)” became their best-known song, and the album reached No. 126 on the Billboard 200, No. 25 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 7 on Heatseekers.
Sound and production
Paris produced the album, with DJ Yon on the turntables, combining hard West Coast funk with the duo’s sharp, grounded lyrics on tracks like “We Roll Deep” and “Wife of a Gangsta.”
Legacy
One of the few women-led rap groups to break out of the Bay in the early 90s, they remain an important part of Oakland hip hop history. Special One died in 2011.
