Explicit Game is the major-label debut of East Oakland rapper Dru Down, born Danyel Robinson, released in September 1994 by Relativity Records.

The story

The album reworks much of his 1993 debut Fools from the Streets with new material added. “Pimp of the Year” reached No. 65 on the Hot 100 and No. 14 on Hot Rap Tracks, and the album hit No. 46 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Guests include the Luniz on “Ice Cream Man,” Yukmouth on “Rescue 911” and JT the Bigga Figga on “Bad Boys.”

Sound and production

A deep roster of Bay producers, including Ant Banks, Tone Capone, Chris Hicks and JT the Bigga Figga, gave the album a smooth, funky Oakland sound. Bootsy Collins is Dru Down’s biological father.

Legacy

Explicit Game helped carry the mid-90s Oakland sound to a national audience.
