Life Is… Too Short

Life Is… Too Short is the album that took Oakland’s Too $hort from local tape-selling legend to national star, released through his own Dangerous Music with Jive Records. It remains his best-selling record and a cornerstone of Bay Area hip hop.

The story

Too $hort built his name selling tapes by hand around Oakland before signing with Jive. This album carried that independent, street-level hustle to a national audience, and its success helped prove that artists outside New York and Los Angeles could build major careers on their own terms.

Sound and production

Produced by Too $hort with collaborators including Al Eaton, the record rides slow, bass-heavy funk grooves under his drawling, conversational delivery. “Don’t Fight the Feelin'” is built on One Way’s 1982 song of the same name.

Charts and certifications

Life Is… Too Short is certified 2× Platinum by the RIAA, the biggest seller in Too $hort’s catalog.

Legacy

Rolling Stone ranked it No. 186 on its 2022 list of the 200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time, and its slow, funky template runs straight through the Bay Area sound that followed.
