Neve 1073

The Neve 1073 is the most famous microphone preamp and EQ ever built. Rupert Neve designed it in 1970 as a channel module for the A88 console commissioned by Wessex Studios in London, and its thick, weighty tone became a benchmark for vocals, drums and bass on records of every genre.

How it works

The 1073 is a discrete Class A preamp with a three-band EQ and a high-pass filter, transformer-coupled in and out through custom Marinair transformers. That transformer iron and the inductor-based mid EQ give it the saturated “British” sound it is known for. Gain runs from +20 to +80 dB in 5 dB steps. The EQ uses fixed, musically chosen frequencies: a 12 kHz high shelf, mids from 360 Hz to 7.2 kHz, low shelves at 35, 60, 110 and 220 Hz, and an 18 dB/octave high-pass at 50, 80, 160 or 300 Hz. That makes it fast to dial in.

In hip hop studios

As hip hop budgets grew, records moved into rooms built around large-format consoles. Chung King in New York, where Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy cut records, built its rooms around big Neve and SSL desks. Exactly which 1073 channels touched which classic rap albums is not well documented, so treat claims of specific 1073 use with care.

Buying one today

Vintage 1073 modules pulled from old consoles are highly collectible. AMS Neve still makes the 1073 to original specs in rack, 500-series and multichannel formats. It is also one of the most copied designs in audio, with many “1073-style” clones and plugin emulations such as Universal Audio’s Neve 1073 collection. Check listings carefully: a vintage module needs a rack and power supply to run, and many listings are clones or kits.
