Dorrough Music

“Dorrough Music” is the debut studio album by Dorrough, released on August 4, 2009, through NGenius Entertainment, Prime Time Click and E1 Music.

The story

Dorrough, a Dallas rapper who grew up the youngest of eleven children and played basketball at Lancaster High School, had been recording since 2003. His single “Ice Cream Paint Job,” produced by 2Much, spread from Dallas in early 2009. It reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 10 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 5 on the Hot Rap Songs chart, and it was later certified platinum. The video included cameos from Lil Boosie, Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Bun B and Chamillionaire, and remixes and freestyles by other artists kept the song in circulation through the year. “Walk That Walk” was also released as a single and reached number 28 on the R&B chart, and “Wired to the T” followed in October 2009.

Sound and production

The album has 15 tracks, with production from 2Much, Big Korey, DJ Montay, G-Luck, Joe Blow Da CEO, Mr. Rogers, Q. Smith, Recka Beats, Todd Hamburger and Woodknock Productions. Jeff Mount engineered, mixed and mastered the record. Guests include Houston rappers Lil’ Flip and Slim Thug, fellow Dallas rapper Tum Tum, and Mista Mac, Tomeka Pearl, Milo and Fat B. Other tracks include “Boy, I Grind.” Critics were mixed. AllMusic’s David Jeffries found the tracks “samey,” while Steve “Flash” Juon of RapReviews heard promise in Dorrough’s “organic delivery” and compared his approach to Scarface.

Legacy

“Dorrough Music” sold 13,000 copies in its first week and reached number 36 on the Billboard 200, number 6 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number 2 on the Top Rap Albums chart. It remains Dorrough’s highest-charting album, ahead of “Get Big” (2010). The album arrived during a period when several Dallas artists, including Lil Wil and Dorrough, were reaching national charts at the same time, and “Ice Cream Paint Job” was the only one of those songs to reach the Hot 100 Top 30.
