Mecca and the Soul Brother is the debut album by Pete Rock & CL Smooth, released on June 9, 1992 by Elektra Records. Produced by the duo and recorded at Greene St. Recording in Manhattan, it is one of the defining production records of the Golden Age.

The story

The album followed the duo’s 1991 debut EP and delivered three singles: “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.),” “Straighten It Out” and “Lots of Lovin’.” “T.R.O.Y.,” a tribute to Heavy D & the Boyz dancer Trouble T Roy, became their signature song, reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles chart and No. 58 on the Hot 100. CL Smooth’s verses cover street life, faith, family and relationships.

Sound and production

Pete Rock built the album on dusty soul and jazz loops, filtered basslines and swinging drums, with his trademark horn samples introducing many tracks. Large Professor and Nevelle Hodge co-produced individual songs.

Charts and certifications

Mecca and the Soul Brother peaked at No. 43 on the Billboard 200 and No. 7 on the R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart. Its commercial numbers trailed bigger 1992 releases, but its influence on producers has been enormous.

Legacy

Rolling Stone ranked it No. 130 on its 2022 list of the 200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums, and the pairing of producer and MC it modeled, alongside Gang Starr, shaped a generation of New York records.
