Dennis Coffey

Evolution

Evolution is the 1971 album by Detroit session guitarist Dennis Coffey, credited with the Detroit Guitar Band. Coffey played on Motown sessions with the Funk Brothers before stepping out on his own.

The story

“Scorpio,” a fuzzed-out funk instrumental, became a Top 10 pop hit, rare territory for a guitar instrumental in 1971.

The break

The drum and conga break in “Scorpio” made it a b-boy standard in the Bronx, and it has remained one of the key breaks for breaking crews ever since.

Legacy

Coffey’s wah-wah guitar and tight Detroit rhythm section have been sampled across hip hop, and “Scorpio” is still a staple of breakbeat compilations.
