The Living Legend is the only album by Baby Huey, the Chicago singer born James Ramey, released in 1971 on Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom label. Huey died in 1970, before it came out.
The story
Baby Huey and the Babysitters were a legendary live act in Chicago. Mayfield produced the album, and it captures a larger-than-life voice with a funk and soul band behind him.
The break
“Listen to Me” has a percussion break that Kool Herc played at early Bronx parties. “Hard Times,” written by Mayfield, became a favorite source for hip hop producers.
Legacy
Little-known when it was released, the album became a crate-digger’s prize, and original pressings are now sought after.
