Toys in the Attic is the 1975 album by Boston rock band Aerosmith, featuring “Walk This Way” and “Sweet Emotion.” It is one of rock’s classic records, and it has a special place in hip hop history.
The break
The opening drums of “Walk This Way” were a staple for Bronx DJs, who cut the intro back and forth for dancers. Hip hop crews knew the break long before most knew the band.
The remake
In 1986, Rick Rubin brought Run-DMC and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry together to remake “Walk This Way.” It became a Top 5 pop hit, broke rap on MTV and revived Aerosmith’s career.
Legacy
The crossover remains one of the most important moments in bringing rap to a mainstream rock audience.
