UTFO is the 1985 debut album by UTFO, the Brooklyn group of Kangol Kid, the Educated Rapper, Doctor Ice and Mix Master Ice, released by Select Records.
The story
“Roxanne, Roxanne,” about a woman who turns down the group’s advances, set off the Roxanne Wars. Teenage MC Roxanne Shanté answered with “Roxanne’s Revenge,” produced by Marley Marl, and dozens of answer records followed.
Sound and production
Full Force, the Brooklyn production team, produced the group, with clean drum-machine grooves and playful vocal routines.
Legacy
The Roxanne Wars were rap’s first great answer-record frenzy and showed how fast the culture could turn a song into a conversation.
