Mantronix: The Album is the 1985 debut by Mantronix, producer Kurtis Mantronik and MC Tee, released by Sleeping Bag Records in New York.

The story

“Fresh Is the Word” and “Bassline” made the duo underground favorites and showed that the producer could be the star of a rap record.

Sound and production

Mantronik programmed dense, stuttering drum patterns on the Roland TR-808 with electro basslines and edits that sounded years ahead of their time.

Legacy

Mantronik’s drum programming influenced hip hop, electro, Miami bass and house, and his records are still studied by producers.
