Future Shock is the 1983 album by jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, produced with Bill Laswell and Michael Beinhorn of Material and released by Columbia.
The story
“Rockit” featured GrandMixer D.ST scratching records, and for millions of people it was their first time hearing a turntable played as an instrument. It won the Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance, and its robot-filled video swept the MTV Video Music Awards.
Sound and production
Hancock traded jazz for electro-funk: drum machines, synthesizers and hard-edged edits, with D.ST’s scratches at the center.
Legacy
Countless DJs point to “Rockit” as the record that made them want to scratch.
