Liquid Swords is the second album by GZA, the Genius of the Wu-Tang Clan, released by Geffen Records in November 1995.
The story
It was part of the run of Wu-Tang solo albums that followed Enter the Wu-Tang. Every member of the Clan appears somewhere on the record, but it’s GZA’s precise, chess-like writing that carries it.
Sound and production
RZA produced the whole album, weaving in dialogue from the samurai film Shogun Assassin between cold, minimal beats. “4th Chamber,” “Shadowboxin’” and “Cold World” are standouts.
Legacy
Liquid Swords is often called the best Wu-Tang solo album, and its artwork, drawn by Denys Cowan, is one of rap’s most famous covers.
