Mystic Stylez is the debut album by Memphis’s Three 6 Mafia, released in 1995 on the group’s Prophet Entertainment label.

The story

DJ Paul and Juicy J had built a following with underground tapes, and the album brought in Lord Infamous, Koopsta Knicca and Gangsta Boo. “Tear da Club Up” and “Da Summa” became Memphis anthems.

Sound and production

DJ Paul and Juicy J produced with hard 808s, horror-movie atmosphere, chanted hooks and dark, lo-fi textures.

Legacy

Its sound has been sampled and imitated for decades, from trap to SoundCloud rap, and the group later won an Academy Award.
