The story

Robert Earl Davis Jr. made hundreds of “gray tapes” for customers out of his house, mixing Southern rap slowed to a crawl. His Screwed Up Click, including Big Hawk, Fat Pat, Lil’ Keke and E.S.G., rapped over his mixes, and the tapes spread across Texas.

Sound and production

Screw slowed records down, repeated phrases and cut between copies, the chopped and screwed style that made songs feel heavy and dreamlike.

Legacy

DJ Screw died in 2000, but screwed and chopped became a global sound, heard today in everything from Houston rap to mainstream pop remixes.
