In a Major Way is E-40’s major-label debut, released by Sick Wid’ It and Jive Records in 1995. The Vallejo rapper had already sold thousands of records independently.

The story

“Sprinkle Me” with Suga-T and “1-Luv” with Levitti brought his slang-heavy style to national audiences, and “Dusted ‘N’ Disgusted” teamed him with 2Pac, Mac Mall and Spice 1.

Sound and production

Studio Ton and Mike Mosley led the production, with slow, synth-heavy funk and deep bass, the sound of Bay Area mobb music.

Legacy

E-40’s inventive slang spread far beyond the Bay, and the album helped prove the independent Bay model could work on a major label.
