Tha Carter III is the sixth album by New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne, released by Cash Money and Universal Motown in June 2008.

The story

After years of giving away mixtapes, Wayne sold about a million copies in the first week, the biggest debut in years. “Lollipop” reached No. 1, and the album won the Grammy for Best Rap Album.

Sound and production

A wide range of producers, from Bangladesh on the minimal “A Milli” to Jim Jonsin and Deezle on “Lollipop,” gave Wayne room for his unpredictable flows.

Legacy

It capped Wayne’s run as rap’s most prolific star and showed what free mixtapes could build.
