The Listening is the debut album by Little Brother, the Durham, North Carolina trio of Phonte, Big Pooh and producer 9th Wonder, released by ABB Records in 2003.
The story
The group formed at North Carolina Central University. The Listening built a devoted following online and in the underground, and it led to 9th Wonder working with Jay-Z on The Black Album.
Sound and production
9th Wonder made the beats in the software program Fruity Loops, with warm, chopped soul samples that proved great beats didn’t need expensive gear.
Legacy
It’s a touchstone for soulful, sample-based rap in the 2000s and for the North Carolina scene.
