Section.80 is the independent debut album by Compton’s Kendrick Lamar, released digitally by Top Dawg Entertainment in July 2011.

The story

A concept album about the generation born in the 1980s, it built on Kendrick’s mixtape buzz. “A.D.H.D” became a blog-era favorite, and “HiiiPoWeR,” produced by J. Cole, was the first single. Dr. Dre was already on board: he had reached out after watching the YouTube video for “Ignorance Is Bliss,” from Kendrick’s 2010 mixtape Overly Dedicated, and Kendrick signed with Top Dawg, Aftermath and Interscope in 2012.

Sound and production

TDE in-house producers including Sounwave and Tae Beast created jazzy, hazy beats for Kendrick’s shape-shifting flows.

Legacy

It’s the first chapter of one of the most acclaimed careers in rap history.
