good kid, m.A.A.d city is Kendrick Lamar’s major-label debut, released by Top Dawg, Aftermath and Interscope in October 2012 and billed as “a short film by Kendrick Lamar.”

The story

The album follows one day in teenage Kendrick’s life in Compton, with skits and voicemails from his parents stitching it together. “Swimming Pools (Drank)” and “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” were hits, and Dr. Dre appears on “Compton.”

Sound and production

Sounwave, Hit-Boy, Pharrell, Just Blaze and others produced. “Money Trees” is built on Beach House’s “Silver Soul.”

Legacy

It is one of the most celebrated concept albums in rap and made Kendrick the voice of his generation.
