Run the Jewels is the debut album by Run the Jewels, the duo of Brooklyn producer-rapper El-P and Atlanta’s Killer Mike, released as a free download by Fool’s Gold in June 2013.

The story

El-P had produced Killer Mike’s R.A.P. Music a year earlier, and the pair kept going. Giving the album away built a devoted following fast.

Sound and production

El-P’s beats are loud, distorted and punk-fast, with room for both MCs to trade aggressive verses. Big Boi appears on “Banana Clipper.”

Legacy

Run the Jewels became one of the most acclaimed acts of the 2010s, releasing their later albums free too.
