To Pimp a Butterfly is the third album by Kendrick Lamar, released by Top Dawg, Aftermath and Interscope in March 2015.

The story

“Alright” became a protest anthem, “King Kunta” a hit, and the album won the Grammy for Best Rap Album.

Sound and production

Jazz and funk musicians including Thundercat, Terrace Martin, Kamasi Washington and Flying Lotus shaped a dense, live-sounding record that nods to P-Funk and free jazz.

Legacy

It’s regularly named among the greatest albums ever made, and it set up Kendrick’s Pulitzer Prize for DAMN. in 2018.
