The story
It was the first project after Kendrick dropped the name K-Dot. One song changed everything: “Ignorance Is Bliss.” Dr. Dre watched its music video on YouTube, and it was that song specifically that made him want to work with Kendrick. The connection led to Kendrick’s 2012 deal with Top Dawg, Aftermath and Interscope.
Sound and production
Top Dawg’s in-house team, including Sounwave, gave the tape moody, jazzy beats, with Black Hippy members Ab-Soul, Jay Rock and ScHoolboy Q around him.
Legacy
It’s the bridge between Kendrick the Compton mixtape rapper and Kendrick the voice of a generation, a year before Section.80.
