Boomin’ Words from Hell is the debut album by Detroit’s Esham, self-released on Reel Life Productions in 1989 when he was 16.
The story
He recorded it in a single day. Esham later said it reflected Detroit’s crack era. A 1990 reissue changed the tracklist and censored “Word After Word,” and a 2015 remaster combined both versions.
Sound and production
Esham produced it himself, mixing rap with dark, rock-leaning sounds, the start of what he called acid rap.
Legacy
It’s the first chapter of Detroit’s acid rap and a root of horrorcore.
