Logic Pro is the Mac’s flagship DAW. It grew out of C-Lab’s Creator and Notator sequencers on the Atari, became Emagic’s Notator Logic in 1993, and turned Mac-only after Apple bought Emagic in 2002.
History
Logic Pro X arrived in 2013 with a virtual Drummer, and later versions added Flex Pitch, Smart Tempo, Session Players and a Stem Splitter. An iPad version came in 2023. Its low one-time price made it a common home studio choice.
The hip hop connection
Engineer Vic Wainstein calls Tyler, the Creator “a Logic Pro guy,” and Igor was produced in Logic before being moved to Pro Tools for mixing. Apple even shipped the original multitrack of a Lil Nas X song as a Logic demo project.
Getting it today
Mac or iPad only. Apple sells it outright and as part of a subscription bundle.
