Operation Stackola is the debut album by Oakland’s Luniz, Yukmouth and Numskull, released by C-Note Records with Noo Trybe and Virgin on July 4, 1995.

The story

It went to No. 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart and No. 20 on the Billboard 200, and was certified platinum. “I Got 5 on It,” with Michael Marshall on the hook, reached No. 8 on the Hot 100 and No. 3 in the UK. “Playa Hata” followed.

Sound and production

Tone Capone produced “I Got 5 on It,” built on Club Nouveau’s “Why You Treat Me So Bad” with touches of Kool & the Gang’s “Jungle Boogie.” DJ Fuze, N.O. Joe, Shock G, DJ Daryl and E-A-Ski & CMT also produced.

Legacy

The Bay Ballas Remix of “I Got 5 on It,” with Dru Down, E-40, Shock G, Richie Rich and Spice 1, is a Bay Area roll call. Jordan Peele’s film Us (2019) brought the song back to a new generation.
