Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde is the debut album by South Central LA’s Pharcyde, released by Delicious Vinyl on November 24, 1992.
The story
Arriving at the height of LA gangsta rap, it offered something else entirely: four friends trading jokes, confessions and crank calls over jazz and funk samples. “Passin’ Me By” went to No. 1 on the Hot Rap Singles chart and No. 52 on the Hot 100, and “Otha Fish,” “Ya Mama” and “4 Better or 4 Worse” followed. The album reached No. 75 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold in 1996.
Sound and production
J-Swift produced nearly all of it, sampling Quincy Jones, Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers, the Meters, Sly & the Family Stone and Jimi Hendrix. L.A. Jay and Slimkid3 produced “Otha Fish.”
Legacy
It helped launch West Coast alternative rap, made Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest albums list, and Kanye West has named it his favorite album.
