2Pacalypse Now is 2Pac’s debut album, released on November 12, 1991, by TNT Recordings and Interscope.
The story
Shakur made it while part of the Digital Underground camp in the Bay Area, months after his debut on their single “Same Song.” After its release, Vice President Dan Quayle attacked the album in connection with a murder case, saying it had no place in society.
Sound and production
Production came from the Underground Railroad, Digital Underground’s team: Big D the Impossible, Shock G, Pee-Wee, DJ J-Z, Raw Fusion and Live Squad. The singles were “Trapped,” “Brenda’s Got a Baby” and “If My Homie Calls.”
Legacy
It peaked at No. 64 on the Billboard 200 and went gold in 1995, introducing the socially focused side of 2Pac that ran through his whole career.
