The story
The record was the duo’s calling card. Side A has the radio mix (3:07) and the “Dog Re-Mix” (4:34) of “Mystro On The Flex,” and side B has “Mass Confusion” (5:20). The songwriting credits go to C. Small, D.R. Brent (Kaos) and J. Wilson (Mystro), and the two rappers are credited as arrangers. All three tracks were also included on the album Outcast Vol. 1 the same year.
Sound and production
Carl “Butch” Small and Gene David produced the single as CarGen Productions, and it was mastered at Masterfonics. The track is driven by drum-machine programming and a heavy bassline, which Metro Times later described as “trunk-rattling.”
Legacy
“Mystro On The Flex” is one of the Detroit records that press histories of the city’s hip hop still name. Metro Times points to it as an example of Detroit’s distinct sound, and Complex includes it with “Mass Confusion” in its survey of late-1980s Detroit rap. The track later turned up on Detroit DJ mixes catalogued on Discogs.
