Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast is the debut studio album by Kid Rock, released on November 27, 1990, on Jive Records. It came out years before his rock crossover and documents his start as a Detroit-area rapper and DJ.
The story
Kid Rock came up through the Beast Crew and opening slots for Boogie Down Productions. With help from D-Nice, he signed to Jive at 17. Jive had trouble promoting the album because of its explicit content, but it sold more than 100,000 copies and made him one of Detroit’s two biggest rap stars of 1990, alongside Esham.
Sound and production
The album is plain hip hop, a contrast with the rock-based sound of his later records. Production credits include Kid Rock, Too Short and Mike E. Clark. Reviewers have heard Beastie Boys and Too Short influences in it. The single “Yo-Da-Lin in the Valley” drew controversy when the FCC fined college radio station WSUC-FM $23,700 for airing it.
Legacy
Critics were mostly unkind: Robert Christgau rated it a “dud,” and AllMusic called it “a mostly laughable recording.” The Village Voice later called “Wax the Booty” a “classic.” Jive dropped Kid Rock after the album. It remains the main document of his Detroit hip hop period.
