Electro Beats For Freaks is the first full-length solo album by Detroit DJ and producer DJ Godfather. Databass Records released it on November 20, 2020 (catalog DB 093X).

The story

Brian Jeffries had been a fixture of Detroit ghettotech since his teens, but until 2020 he had released singles, EPs, mixes and label compilations rather than a solo album. Resident Advisor reported that most of the 44 tracks had not been released before. In a Metro Times interview, Jeffries said he chose the tracks from close to 100 finished productions. In the same 2020 interview he discussed a new version of DJ Slugo’s “Godzilla,” whose horn parts were replayed to avoid sample clearance problems. Big Sean later sampled that version on “The Baddest” from Detroit 2.

Sound and production

The album runs about two hours and covers ghettotech, juke, electro and Baltimore club. Guests include Parkhouse, Lil Mz 313, Goodmoney G100, King Saadi, Dan Diamond and Christina Chriss.

Legacy

Coming decades into his career, the album started a productive period for Godfather. He followed it with This Detroit Thing of Ours (2021) and D3T.3L3CTR0 (2022). It also kept Databass active as an outlet for Detroit’s fast electro-based club music.
