The Shining was released by BBE Records on August 22, 2006, six months after J Dilla’s death. It reached No. 103 on the Billboard 200 and No. 9 on Top Independent Albums.

The story

Dilla worked on it from 2004 to 2006, including while being treated at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. It was about 75 percent complete when he died, and Karriem Riggins, whom Dilla and his mother trusted with the record, finished it.

Sound and production

Much of it was built on a Boss SP-303 sampler and a portable 45 record player. Guests include Common, Busta Rhymes, D’Angelo, Madlib, Black Thought, Pharoahe Monch, Dwele, MED and Guilty Simpson. “Won’t Do” got a video in December 2006.

Legacy

It holds a Metacritic score of 80, and Spin ranked it among the 40 best albums of 2006. Released months after Donuts, it’s often heard as the other half of Dilla’s final work.
