Ghetto D

“Ghetto D” is the sixth studio album by Master P, released on September 2, 1997, on No Limit Records and Priority Records. It was his first album to top the Billboard 200.

The story

The album came at a point when No Limit was releasing records at a rapid pace from its New Orleans base. It reached No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, with reported sales of 726,000 copies in the week it moved to the top spot. The lead single, “I Miss My Homies,” with Pimp C and Silkk the Shocker, reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on Hot Rap Singles. “Make ’Em Say Uhh!,” released in January 1998, peaked at No. 16 on the Hot 100, Master P’s highest-charting single at the time.

Sound and production

Master P served as executive producer, with production from Beats By the Pound, Randy Jefferson, K-Lou and Dez. KLC produced “Make ’Em Say Uhh!,” which features Fiend, Silkk the Shocker, Mia X and Mystikal. Other guests include C-Murder, Pimp C and Kane & Abel. The Michael Martin–directed video for “Make ’Em Say Uhh!,” set on a basketball court with a gold tank and a cameo from Shaquille O’Neal, was nominated for Best Rap Video at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards.

Legacy

The RIAA certified “Ghetto D” triple platinum. The album appeared on the Billboard year-end charts for both 1997 and 1998. VH1 later placed “Make ’Em Say Uhh!” at No. 26 on its list of the 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop, and the song appeared again, with Snoop Dogg in place of Mystikal, on “MP da Last Don.”
