Solja Rags

Solja Rags is the second studio album by New Orleans rapper Juvenile and his first for Cash Money Records. It was released on May 13, 1997, before the label signed its distribution deal with Universal.

The story

Juvenile had debuted on Warlock Records with Being Myself and left that label after disagreeing with its wish for him to record bounce music. He met Cash Money’s Bryan “Baby” Williams at a bus stop and joined the label, where Baby and Ronald “Slim” Williams served as executive producers of this album. Recorded in 1996 and 1997, it arrived in the same year Juvenile, B.G., Lil Wayne and Turk formed the Hot Boys, and Wayne, B.G., Turk and the Hot Boys all appear on the record.

Sound and production

Mannie Fresh produced every song on the 14-track, roughly 58-minute album. The record sits between gangsta rap and the New Orleans street sound that Cash Money was building on its independent releases, with Juvenile’s delivery rooted in the city’s local rap and bounce scene.

Legacy

Sold through Cash Money’s own regional network, Solja Rags moved over 200,000 copies independently and reached number 55 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Its local success set up 400 Degreez the following year, which carried Juvenile and Cash Money to a national audience.
