The Mind of Mannie Fresh

The Mind of Mannie Fresh is the debut solo album by Cash Money producer Mannie Fresh, released December 21, 2004, on Cash Money and Universal Records.

The story

After more than a decade producing for Cash Money’s roster and recording as half of Big Tymers, Mannie Fresh released an album under his own name late in 2004. It proved to be his last full project for the label; he left Cash Money in 2005. The lead single “Real Big” reached number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Sound and production

The album is long, with 30 tracks and a running time of almost 79 minutes, mixing full songs with skits and interludes. Mannie Fresh produced most of it himself, with David Banner also credited as a producer. Guests include Lil Wayne on several tracks, R. Kelly, Petey Pablo, Big Tymers, Bun B, David Banner and Lil’ Mo. Fresh handles most of the rapping, with the humor and storytelling familiar from his Big Tymers verses.

Legacy

The album debuted at number 59 on the Billboard 200, selling over 70,000 copies in its first week, then rose to a peak of number 47; it reached number 16 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Reviews were divided: Stylus Magazine and PopMatters rated it highly, while Rolling Stone and USA Today each gave it one star. It stands as the solo statement from the producer behind Cash Money’s late-1990s run.
