“Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor” is the debut studio album by Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco, released on September 19, 2006, through 1st & 15th Entertainment and Atlantic Records.

The story

Lupe’s standout verse on Kanye West’s “Touch the Sky” raised his profile, and Jay-Z signed on as an executive producer alongside Charles “Chilly” Patton and Lupe himself. The whole album leaked online in April 2006, forcing the original version to be shelved; Lupe recorded new material and broadened his list of producers, and sample-clearance problems led to further last-minute changes. The title refers to the corner stores found across Chicago, which he framed as a tug of war between good and bad influences.

Sound and production

Production comes from Soundtrakk, Prolyfic, The Neptunes, Kanye West, Mike Shinoda, Needlz, Craig Kallman and Brandon Howard, with Jill Scott guesting on “Daydreamin’.” Across the record Lupe covers skateboarding, poverty, faith, terrorism, racism and television culture, with tracks such as “Kick, Push,” “The Cool,” “Hurt Me Soul” and “American Terrorist.”

Legacy

The album sold about 81,000 copies in its first week and peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It earned three Grammy nominations, including Best Rap Album, and “Daydreamin’” later won Best Urban/Alternative Performance. Many outlets named it the best rap album of 2006, and the RIAA certified it gold in 2021.
