“Ghetto Dreams” is the debut solo studio album by Fat Pat, released on March 17, 1998, through Wreckshop Records.
The story
Fat Pat, born Patrick Hawkins, was a founding member of DJ Screw’s Screwed Up Click and the brother of Big Hawk, and he built his name on Screw’s tapes during the mid-1990s. He recorded the album in 1997 and 1998 at J2 Recording Studio in Houston, but did not live to see it released. On February 3, 1998, he was shot and killed in Houston at the age of 27, and the case remains unsolved. The album arrived about six weeks later as his first posthumous release.
Sound and production
D-Reck served as executive producer, with beats from Double D, Noke D, Sean “Solo” Jemison, Prowla, Big Swift and J Slash. The sixteen tracks run more than 71 minutes and feature a wide circle of Houston collaborators, including Big Hawk, Big Moe, Big Pokey, Lil’ Keke, C-Note and singer Ronnie Spencer.
Legacy
The album reached No. 39 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 19 on the Heatseekers Albums chart. The single “Tops Drop” peaked at No. 10 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 and became a lasting Houston anthem, later used as UFC fighter Derrick Lewis’s walkout song and played at Houston Cougars basketball games. It was followed by another posthumous album, “Throwed in da Game.”
