See all on eBay →“On Top of the World” is the third studio album by 8Ball & MJG, released on October 31, 1995, through Suave House Records and Relativity Records.
The story
Recorded during 1994 and 1995 at Digital Services in Houston, the album widened the duo’s reach well beyond the South. “Friend or Foe” brought in Bay Area rappers E-40 and Mac Mall alongside Big Mike and Rodney Ellis. Other guests included Nuckle Heads, South Circle and Nina Creque, who sang on “Space Age Pimpin’,” the duo’s first charting single. Its cover was designed by Pen & Pixel Graphics.
Sound and production
T-Mix produced every track, with DJ Squeeky on scratches. The album runs 15 tracks and about 71 minutes, and it leans into a smooth, funk-heavy Southern sound on songs like “Pimp in My Own Rhyme,” “Top of the World” and “Break’em Off.”
Legacy
The album peaked at number 8 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and was certified gold by the RIAA. “Space Age Pimpin’” reached number 58 on the R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart and number 22 on the Hot Rap Singles chart. The song was later sampled by Curren$y, and the album remains one of the defining Suave House releases.
