The story
Project Pat, born Patrick Houston in North Memphis, is the older brother of Three 6 Mafia co-founder Juicy J. He debuted on the Hypnotize Minds label with “Ghetty Green” in 1999. This follow-up was recorded at Hypnotize Minds Studio in Memphis in 2000 and 2001, with guest spots from Three 6 Mafia, La Chat, Crunchy Black and Lord Infamous.
Sound and production
DJ Paul and Juicy J produced and executive produced the 20-track album. Lead single “Chickenhead,” featuring La Chat and Three 6 Mafia, came from a playful idea Pat pitched to his brother, who admitted he doubted it at first. “Don’t Save Her,” featuring Crunchy Black, followed. Both songs got national radio play, and their videos ran on BET and MTV.
Legacy
The album peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200, number 2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number 1 on the Independent Albums chart, and the RIAA certified it gold in March 2001. “Chickenhead” reached number 87 on the Hot 100 and number 24 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart and helped La Chat break through nationally. Reviews were split, from a B in Entertainment Weekly to a D+ from Robert Christgau.
