I’m Serious

“I’m Serious” is the debut studio album by T.I., released on October 9, 2001, through Arista Records and Ghet-O-Vision Entertainment.

The story

T.I. was discovered in 1999 by Kawan “KP” Prather’s Ghet-O-Vision and recorded the album between 1999 and 2001. He shortened his early nickname Tip to T.I. out of respect for Q-Tip. The title track, a Neptunes production featuring Beenie Man, was released as the lone single in June 2001 and found regional play without reaching the Hot 100.

Sound and production

Production came from DJ Toomp, Craig Love, Maseo, Brian Kidd, The Neptunes, Jazze Pha, Yung D and Lil Jon, with T.I. co-producing and serving as executive producer. Reviewers praised his storytelling and potential while noting that many of the beats sounded similar across the record.

Legacy

The album peaked at number 98 on the Billboard 200 and number 27 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, selling about 14,000 copies in its first week. Its underperformance led to his exit from Arista, and he moved to Atlantic Records, where “Trap Muzik” (2003) made him a star. In hindsight “I’m Serious” is viewed as an overlooked early statement from one of Atlanta’s defining rappers.
