Acid Rap is the 2013 mixtape by Chicago’s Chance the Rapper, released for free in April 2013.

The story

Chance turned down major-label deals and gave the tape away. “Cocoa Butter Kisses” and “Juice” became favorites, and the tape made him one of the most talked-about new artists in rap.

Sound and production

Jazzy, soulful and full of live horns and choirs, the production matches Chance’s playful, emotional voice.

Legacy

He stayed independent, and his 2016 project Coloring Book became the first streaming-only album to win a Grammy.
