Boxcar Sessions

Boxcar Sessions is the debut album by Oakland MC Saafir, born Reggie Gibson, released in 1994 by Qwest and Warner Bros. Saafir led the Hobo Junction crew and was known for his unpredictable, rhythm-bending flow.

The story

Saafir first appeared on Digital Underground’s The Body-Hat Syndrome and acted in Menace II Society. The album was recorded at Pajama Studios in Oakland, and “Light Sleeper” and “Just Riden'” were released as singles. In late 1994, Hobo Junction’s battle with Casual and the Hieroglyphics crew on KMEL’s Wake Up Show drew national attention to the Bay underground.

Sound and production

Producers J Groove, Big Nose and DJ Jay-Z (an Oakland producer, not the Brooklyn rapper) built loose, jazzy tracks that critics compared to A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, heard on cuts like “Swig of the Stew” and “Playa Hayta.”

Legacy

It stands as one of the most distinctive Bay Area records of the 90s and a cornerstone of the region’s alternative rap history.
