Capital Punishment, Big Pun’s debut album, was released on April 28, 1998, through Loud Records and Terror Squad Productions. It was the first release from Fat Joe’s Terror Squad imprint. It was recorded in 1997 and 1998 with production from RZA, Rockwilder, Showbiz, Knobody, Fat Joe and others. Guests included Black Thought, Wyclef Jean, Busta Rhymes, Noreaga, Prodigy, Inspectah Deck and Fat Joe.

The album peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. “I’m Not a Player” reached No. 57 on the Hot 100, and the remix “Still Not a Player,” featuring Joe, reached No. 24. “You Came Up,” featuring Noreaga, was also released as a single. The RIAA certified the album platinum, making it the first hip hop album by a Latino solo artist to go platinum.

Capital Punishment was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards, where it lost to Jay-Z’s Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life. Critics singled out Pun’s dense, multisyllabic rhyming. Rolling Stone later placed the album at No. 128 on its list of the 200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time.
