Daily Operation is the third album by Gang Starr, released on May 5, 1992 by Chrysalis Records. With DJ Premier’s production sharper than ever and Guru at his most assured, it is a cornerstone of New York boom bap.

The story

Recorded in 1992 at D&D and Calliope studios in New York City, the album delivered the singles “Take It Personal,” “Ex Girl to Next Girl” and “2 Deep.” Gang Starr Foundation members Jeru the Damaja and Lil Dap make appearances.

Sound and production

Premier’s chopped jazz and soul samples, hard-hitting drums and scratched hooks became the blueprint for the D&D Studios sound that shaped New York hip hop through the decade.

Charts and certifications

Daily Operation peaked at No. 65 on the Billboard 200 and No. 14 on the R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart.

Legacy

AllMusic called it one of the best albums of the decade in any genre, and Complex ranked it No. 41 on its list of the best rap albums of the 1990s.
