Die A Legend

“Die a Legend” is the debut studio album by Chicago rapper Polo G, released on June 7, 2019, through Columbia Records.

The story

Polo G, born Taurus Bartlett, grew up on Chicago’s North Side, and his family’s roots run through the Cabrini-Green projects he watched being torn down. His songs about that displacement, lost friends and neighborhood violence caught on quickly online, and he signed with Columbia ahead of the album. The breakout single “Pop Out,” featuring Lil Tjay, arrived in February 2019 and became his first Billboard Hot 100 entry, eventually peaking at No. 11. “Finer Things,” “Battle Cry” and “Deep Wounds” also preceded the album, and “Pop Out Again” with Lil Baby and Gunna was released alongside it.

Sound and production

Recorded across 2018 and 2019, the album pairs drill-rooted street storytelling with plaintive, melodic hooks. Producers include The Superiors, Detrakz, JTK, Iceberg, JD On Tha Track, 1040 Beats and D Major. At about 41 minutes, it keeps its focus on grief, loyalty and the weight of growing up in the city.

Legacy

The album debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 with about 38,000 album-equivalent units and reached No. 2 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. It was later certified 2× Platinum by the RIAA and Gold in the UK. Pitchfork gave it Best New Music, and it ranks among the most successful Chicago rap debuts of its era, setting up “The Goat” and “Hall of Fame.”
