Direct from the Backstreet is the debut album by Totally Insane, the East Palo Alto duo of Mac-10 and Ad Kapone. It first appeared on cassette in 1991 on Midtown Productions, then was reissued by In-A-Minute Records in 1992.
The story
An earlier project was shelved after the group’s first producer, Mike D Washington, was killed. “No More Mr. Nice Guy” sold strongly on the streets and landed the duo a three-album deal with In-A-Minute. The album reached No. 87 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Sound and production
T.C. Productions and the group produced the record, with hard, stripped-down funk behind tracks like “Kiss No Ass,” “Mack Game” and “I Can’t Be Faded.”
Legacy
It put East Palo Alto on the Bay Area rap map and remains a prized In-A-Minute title.
