Doris is the major-label debut of Los Angeles rapper Earl Sweatshirt, released by Tan Cressida and Columbia in August 2013.
The story
Earl became a legend in Odd Future while he was away at a school in Samoa, and fans chanted “Free Earl” at shows. Doris was his return, led by the introspective “Chum.”
Sound and production
Earl produced much of it himself, as randomblackdude, with Tyler, the Creator and others. Guests include Tyler, Vince Staples, Frank Ocean and RZA.
Legacy
Doris set the tone for Earl’s dense, murky style and influenced a wave of underground rap.
