Escape is the 1984 second album by Brooklyn’s Whodini, Jalil Hutchins and John “Ecstasy” Fletcher with DJ Grandmaster Dee, released by Jive Records.
The story
It was loaded with hits: “Friends,” “Five Minutes of Funk,” “Freaks Come Out at Night” and “Big Mouth.” It went platinum, among the first rap albums to do so.
Sound and production
Larry Smith, who also produced Run-DMC, gave Whodini a smoother, R&B-leaning sound built on drum machines and synths, bridging rap and the pop charts.
Legacy
Whodini were among the first rap acts to tour arenas, and “Friends” has been sampled and interpolated for decades.
