Fantastic, Vol. 2 is the second album by Slum Village, the Detroit trio of Jay Dee (J Dilla), T3 and Baatin, released by GoodVibe Recordings and Barak Records on June 13, 2000.

The story

Recorded in 1997 and 1998 for A&M Records, it sat unreleased for more than a year after A&M folded. In that time Jay Dee’s reputation grew through his work for Common, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu and A Tribe Called Quest.

Sound and production

Jay Dee produced most of it, with additional production from Pete Rock and D’Angelo. Guests are DJ Jazzy Jeff, Q-Tip, D’Angelo, Busta Rhymes, Kurupt, Pete Rock and Common. Singles included “Climax (Girl Shit)” and “Raise It Up.”

Legacy

Pitchfork rated it 8.5 out of 10. It was the group’s last album with Jay Dee as a full member.
