F#@!in’ Backstabber is a cassette single by Soul Intent, released on February 25, 1995, on Mashin’ Duck Records (MM6760) and packaged in an O-card. The B-side is “Biterphobia.”
The story
The single came at the end of Soul Intent’s run. Eminem wrote the lyrics, performed and created the artwork, and Proof appeared as a guest and wrote the liner notes. According to Manix, 300 copies were printed. Discogs describes it as the first professionally printed Eminem release. The song was later reworked as “Backstabber” on Eminem’s 1996 album Infinite.
Sound and production
Manix produced and arranged both songs, Mike Nice engineered, and DJ Butterfingers supplied scratches. The sleeve notes say the tape used Dolby B noise reduction and Digalog duplication on chrome-cobalt tape, and that all music was produced and arranged for Mashin’ Duck Records.
Legacy
As one of the few professionally duplicated Soul Intent releases, the tape is highly collectible, and unofficial reissues appeared in 2017 and 2020. It is also the most direct recorded link between Eminem, Proof and the Detroit producers who first recorded them.
